As Rommel's Afrika Corps approaches Cairo in summer 1942, the ageing British cruise liner, RMS Laconia hastily sets sail, packed with Italian POWs, brothel workers suspected of spying and English passengers. The liner is torpedoed in the mid-Atlantic and as the ship sinks the U-boat captain hears Italians calling for help. In a bizarre twist the Germans aided by the Italian and Vichy French navies begin rescue operations while the American Air Force bombs survivors. This story is completely true.
